What's Happening in Room 30.....

Important Announcements:
  •  The students brought home their 1st Week in Review/Weekly Reading Log on Friday.  Please review it with your child, sign both sides and return on Tuesday.
  • If your child has an extra clipboard at home, please have them bring it to school. I do not have a class set, so a few extra would be great.
  • The students created their personal reading plan for reading at home.  Your child should have shared it with you and began implementing it this past week.  They are required to read 80 minutes a week at home.  (20 minutes 4 times a week).  The students are given their Weekly Reading Log on Mondays and are kept in their expandable folder for them to complete after each evening of reading for the week.
Word of the Week: Inquire -(term from science) (The student inquired about the reading log because the requirements were not clear).

Dates to Remember:

Tuesday: Fundraiser money and orders due!
Wednesday:  PTO Meeting at 6:30  in the library

What's Happening in Our Room....

Reading Workshop:
  • The students are continuing to focus on "thinking while reading" to monitor their comprehension.  They are practicing the "stop and jot" strategy.  This is a simple strategy to stop reading and jot down what they are thinking.  This could include questions they have from their reading, a connection to the story/character or a prediction.
  • The students will learn different techniques to clarify their reading when they feel they are not comprehending.
Writer's Workshop:
  • The students will be introduced to elements required for realistic fiction writing.  They will begin brainstorming story ideas and developing their main character.
  • The students will set up their spelling notebook and begin recording words they need to include on their spelling test.  They will be given their words on Friday and have their 1st spelling test on 9/24.
Math:
  • The students will review chapter 1 on Tuesday and will be tested on Wednesday.
  • Chapter 2 will focus on the addition properties and addition and subtraction patterns.
  • They will continue to practice their multiplication facts and be tested several times a week using Rocket Math.  The students are recording their progress and progressing at their own pace.
Science:
  • The students will conduct another science investigation as they write their own hypothesis, identify the variables and begin learning the steps to writing a procedure.
