Important Announcements:

  • MAP testing is right around the corner and our  MAP testing schedule is listed below.  Please make every effort to avoid scheduling Dr. appointments during our testing windows.

  • Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences are this Thursday.  If we have a conference scheduled, I am looking forward to meeting with you!
  • I am setting an ALEKS challenge for the students!  Those students who finish the 4th grade ALEKS pie by April 30th, will get to participate in a pizza party!  We already have 3 participants and several who are very close.

Word of the Week: staggered (recommended by Isabel)  The tired man staggered to the door when the doorbell rang.

What's Happening in Our Room.... 
Reading Workshop: 
  • The students will learn about point of view this week.  The students will be able to identify 1st and 3rd person point of views and understand how a story can be changed when told from a different point of view.
  • They will also be studying author's purpose.  The students will be presented with different texts and asked to identify the author's purpose: persuade, entertain or inform the audience.
Writer's Workshop:
  • We will begin our Poetry Unit this week!  The students will study several different poems and identify how the author used figurative language and creative wording to express his/her thoughts through poetry.  This will prepare them to write a class anthology of poetry.
Math:
  • We will begin learning about customary measurement this week.  As we work with measurement, we will review area and perimeter through hands-on measuring activities.
Science
  • We will continue with our Matter Unit, and we will incorporate metric measurement activities as we study mass, volume and weight.

What's Happening in Room 30.........

Important Announcements:

  • You will be receiving your child's 3rd quarter reflection in the mail later this week.  The students did a wonderful job reflecting on their behavior and academics. They took the activity seriously and came up with great goals for 4th quarter.
  • The 2nd and 4th grade music concert is Wednesday night at the LHS auditorium!
  • Spring Break is next week!  I will not assign any homework over Spring Break, other than reading, but I do encourage the students to work on ALEKS a couple of times throughout the week.  Several students have finished the 4th grade level and are continuing on to 5th grade!  I am hoping to see everyone complete the 4th grade level by the end of the school year.

Word of the Week: etiquette (from Wonder, our read aloud)  It is important to show proper dinner etiquette when you are at a nice restaurant.

Reading Workshop: 
  • The students will continue to practice close reading and annotating passages to help formulate thorough responses to questions as they work with their reading partners. 
Writer's Workshop:
  • After reading Oliver Button is a Sissy, the students will write a different ending to the story following specific guidelines.
  • We will begin our Poetry Unit this week!  The students will use Padlet, an online bulletin board, to share ideas and thoughts on specific poems presented to the class.
Math:
  • We began studying perimeter and area on Friday and will continue through the week.  They will learn to relate perimeter and area through fun, hands-on activities.
Science
  • We will begin our Matter Unit this week.  We will incorporate metric measurement activities as we study mass, volume and weight.

What's Happening in Room 30.........

Important Announcements:

  • We had a great turn out for our Writing Celebration on Wednesday.  If you missed it, please ask your child to share his/her informational writing piece found in the google drive. They turned out great and they are proud of their pieces!
  • Your child will be bringing home a form for our upcoming spring conferences on Monday.  Conferences will be help on March 31st.  Please read and respond accordingly at your earliest convenience.
  • This week your child will be writing a 3rd quarter reflection.  The students will be thinking about their academic habits and behavior as they write.  Your child's reflection will be shared with you, and I will let you know when it will be coming home. 

Word of the Week: envy (recommended by Alyssa)  I was very envious when you told me you were going on a cruise.

What's Happening in Our Room.... 
Reading Workshop:
  • The students will be reading an article from Newsela.com this week explaining the results of Super Tuesday.  
  •  The students will begin to practice responding to specific reading questions that will help prepare for the upcoming MAP test.
Writer's Workshop:
  •  The students will be reflecting and writing a 3rd quarter reflection this week.  We will also be reviewing capitalization rules and creating creative sentences modeled from our weekly mentor sentence.
  • Spelling words will be given on Monday and tested on Friday, March 18th.
Math:
  • The students are rocking decimals!  They have learned how to convert fractions to decimals, order decimals and convert tenths to hundredths to add the fractions.  ( 3/10 + 40/100 =  30/100 + 40/100 = 70/100).
  • We will review on Wednesday and be tested over chapter 10 on Thursday
Social Studies:
  • The students will be learning about slavery and the Underground Railroad.
