What's Happening in Room 30........

Important Announcements:

  •  We are OUT of pencils, and your child will need to replenish his/her personal supply as soon as possible. Thank you!!
  •  The students are putting in the time and effort with ALEKS!  There is a fierce competition going on for earning the ALEKS Queen/King title!  The student who spends the most time on ALEKS for the week and the student who completes the most topics for the week, will earn the title. Each crowned student will get to sit at my desk during math and enjoy a special snack.
  • After completing the Classroom Leadership application, the students were assigned their new leadership role for our classroom last week.  They take great pride in their leadership roles as they help our classroom run smoothly.
Word of the Week: apprentice (from our read aloud, Wonder The apprentice helped the carpenter carry the wood to the truck.

What's Happening in Our Room.... 
Reading Workshop:
  • The students will begin book clubs next week, and we will preparing for them this week.  The students will learn book club expectations and how discussions will take place.
Writer's Workshop:
  •  The students are finishing up their informational writing pieces.  This week, they will focus on editing and finalizing each google slide.  Mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 2nd!  We will have our Writing Celebration from 9:00 - 9:45.  Invitations will be coming home later this week!
Math:
  • The students will learn how to subtract fractions with regrouping and multiply a fraction by a whole number.  They will review on Wednesday and be tested over chapter 9 on Thursday.
Social Studies:
  • The students are continuing to learn about pioneer life.

What's Happening in Room 30.....

Important Announcements:

  • The students will have a vocabulary test on Friday.
  • Crestwood's Science Night is this Thursday at 6:30.  Mad Science will be at Crestwood with hands-on science activities along with the opportunity to see the science fair projects created by Crestwood students.  Come join the fun!
  •  We are starting a fun incentive using our online math program, ALEKS.  Each week, I will be looking for 2 students to be the ALEKS Queen/King for the week.  One student will be announced as the ALEKS Queen/King for completing the most topics in the week, and the other student will be announced as the ALEKS Queen/King for spending the most time working on ALEKS for the week.  This past week, Abbey spent 2 hours and 33 minutes on ALEKS and Macallan and Nathan tied in completing 11 topics this past week!  They will get to sit at my desk with a special treat during math wearing a stylish crown.  Way to go, Abbey, Macallan and Nathan!

Word of the Week: vex (feeling annoyed or worried)  Julie was vexed when she was ready to play in the snow and couldn't find her boots.

What's Happening in Our Room.... 
Reading Workshop:
  • We will continue to practice using F.U.N. (find, underline and number) and finding text proof when answering questions about a given text this week. Having the students pre-read questions and then go back to the text to find answers are two strategies we have been working on in class.  The students use F.U.N. when they locate the answer in the text.  They find the answer, underline it and place the question number next to the answer.  
Writer's Workshop:
  •  The students are creating wonderful google slides for their informational writing pieces.  This week, they will begin to edit their writing and decide on specific text features to include in each slide.  
Math:
  • The students are continuing to learn about fractions.  They will be adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions this week.
Social Studies:

  • The students started social studies this past week with Ms. Dausmann and are learning about the life of a pioneer.

What's Happening in Room 30......

Important Announcements:

  • Instead of spelling words this week, the students will be given a list of 12 words from our vocabulary wall.  They will be responsible for knowing the meaning of each word and correctly using each one in a sentence.  The students will be test on Friday, February 19th.
  • Our Valentine's Day party is this Friday from 2-3.  Thank you, Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Aiken for volunteering to plan the party together.
  • The students brought home a note last week regarding Valentine cards for their classmates.  They are welcome to decorate a shoe box or bag at home to collect their valentines.  They can bring it in anytime this week.  If your child is bringing in valentines for his/her classmates, please send one for everyone.  The students' names are listed on the back of the note.

What's Happening in Our Room.... 
Reading Workshop:
  • The students will study play features and read a play from Scholastic Storyworks, The Daring Escape of Henry Box Brown.  They will also practice writing constructive responses to specific text questions.
Writer's Workshop:
  • The students are writing and designing their informational text using google slides.  After writing their chapters, they will decide on specific text features to include to enhance and better explain their chapters. 
Math:
  • This week, the students will learn how mixed numbers and improper fractions are related and practice converting them.
  • We will review fractions on Tuesday and be tested over chapter 8 on Thursday.
Science:
  • We will wrap-up our electricity unit this week with the students working in small groups creating snap circuits and designing circuits online.
