What's Happening in Room 30.....

Important Announcements:
  • If you were unable to make Curriculum Night, a packet of material was sent home on Friday with your child.  Please take a few minutes to read it and let me know if you have any questions.
  • If you have not completed the "Parent Response Sheet" or the "Parent Reading Interview", it will be coming home on Monday.  Please complete and return it as soon as possible.  The information you share with me about your child is very helpful.
  • If your child has an extra clipboard at home, please have them bring it to school. I do not have a class set, so a few extra would be great.
  • The students will bring home their 1st "Week in Review" on Friday.  The front is a review of their week and the backside is their Reading Log for the week.  Please review with your child and sign both sides before returning it on Monday.
  • The students will be mastering their multiplication facts using Rocket Math.  They took a pre-assessment on Friday.  On Monday, I will be sending home your child's pre-assessment for you to review. This assessment will help your child set goals and show steady progress as they master his/her facts.
Word of the Week: Stamina (The students have been practicing their reading and writing stamina in the classroom.)

What's Happening in Our Room....
Reading Workshop:
  • The students will be introduced to the "30 Book Challenge" this week.  The students are encouraged to read 30 books from a variety of genres this year.  They will keep track of their progress in their Reader's Notebook.
  • The students will create their own personal Reading Plan to help them complete their weekly reading at home.  They will be required to read at least 4 times a week for 20 minutes.  After your child creates his/her plan, they will be asked to share it with you and return it to school with your signature.
  • They will begin to practice talking with a partner about a book.  We will be using our class read aloud, The Big 1-0,  as the discussion.
Writer's Workshop:
  • The students will continue to generate writing ideas in their Writer's Notebook and write about specific ideas while working towards increasing their writing stamina.
Math:
  • The students will continue to learn about place value.  We will review chapter 1 on Thursday, and the students will be tested on Friday.  The students will come home on Thursday with their math notebook and the review.  The test is very similar to the review, so this is a great tool to use to study.
Science:
  • The students will use scientist tools to make observations.
  • They will be introduced to the Scientific Method and do a simple investigation after writing a hypothesis.
Social Studies:
  • The students will be taking Science for the first 1/2 of the quarter and Social Studies the 2nd 1/2.
