What's Happening in Room 34...
Things To Know...
- Several students received a notice from Crestwood's library for books that have not been returned. Please ask your child if they have outstanding books and return them to school as soon as possible. Thank you!
- Please take a few minutes to complete an end of the year questionnaire. I will use your feedback to help plan for next year. Thank you.
- You are invited to visit our classroom on Tuesday between 9:30 and 10:15 to view our awesome taco trucks!
- Your child will be bringing home several writing pieces on Thursday! Please keep an eye out for them because they are keepers!

- The students will be finishing up their book clubs this week! They are doing a GREAT job with group discussions!
Writer's Workshop:
- The students will be creating a Summer Bucket List! Keep an eye out for it! They will contain realistic, fun activities that you and your child can turn to for times when summer begins to get boring.... (can that actually happen?!)
Math:
- The students will be introduced to a few 5th grade math concepts!
Science:
- The students will dissect owl pellets this week as we continue to learn about the food chain.

What's Happening in Room 34...
Things To Know...
- Our field trip to the Gempp conservation area is on Wednesday. If you child has not returned the permissions slip, please do so as soon as possible.
- Reminders for this field trip:
- Bring a sack lunch and drink
- Wear tennis shoes and long socks are recommended
- Apply sunscreen and bug repellent before arriving to school
- The students can wear a hat and bring a drawstring bag
- Crestwood's Field Day is on Friday! Students may wear their swimsuit (girls under clothes and boys may wear their trunks). Students should bring a change of clothes, shoe/socks and a towel to change into after morning water games.
- To end our Taco Truck design activity, we will have a taco truck visit Crestwood for the 4th grade students to purchase lunch and view the truck on Wednesday, May 22nd. A menu will be coming home on Monday. We ask that each student send in his/her order and money by Friday, so we can give the taco truck the order ahead of time.

Reader's Workshop:
- We will continue reading I Survived the Revolutionary War as a class read aloud as we learn many key events of the war. The students will practice summarizing each chapter in a few sentences. We will also be participating in a Virtual Field Trip through Scholastic!
- The students will continue working with their book club this week! They are loving their books! Ask your child to tell you about their book club book! The students are responsible for reading and completing a writing task to help lead their book discussions.
Writer's Workshop:
- The students will publish their poems this week, and we will create a class anthology of poems on food!
Math:
- The students will design their taco truck this week and figure out the area and perimeter of each item inside the truck.
Science:
- We are going to the Claire Gempp Conservation Area on Wednesday. Please sign and return the permission slip.

What's Happening in Room 34...
Things To Know...
- The BOGO Scholastic Book Fair is this week at Crestwood! The students will be previewing on Monday and will have opportunities throughout the week to purchase books! It's a GREAT opportunity to stock up on some great reads for the summer!
- We are taking a walking field trip to the Sappington House on Friday. The historic house is right across the street from school. The students will learn about the history of Thomas Sappington. "He" will also make a visit to our classroom on Wednesday to preview our visit!
- We will participate in Global Day of Design tomorrow! The students will be using what they have learned about specialized structures to design and create an animal to live in a given creative environment.
- The students will be bringing home their math books this week and next. They are GREAT resources for the summer. The books are FULL of work pages and lessons. I highly encourage you to browse through them and make good use of them.
- The students can share what they did over the weekend with their peers on our new Padlet! Your child can access it by going to padlet.com/kbranding1/weekend . The students are familiar with Padlet because we use it in the classroom regularly, so they should have no problem sharing a picture or just a few words. I look forward to sharing it during our class meeting tomorrow.

Reader's Workshop:
- We will continue reading the I Survived the Revolutionary War as a class read aloud as we learn many key events of the war. The students will practice summarizing, in a few sentences, each chapter. We will also be participating in a Virtual Field Trip through Scholastic!
- The students chose their book for our last book club, and we will begin reading on Monday. The groups will decide on their reading pages and each student will choose their writing task from a menu for each reading assignment to complete. The writing tasks will help hold them accountable for completing their reading and also help lead their book club discussions.
Writer's Workshop:
- We will finish up our poetry writing this week and begin publishing near the end of the week.
Math:
- We reviewed telling time on an analog clock this past week. I encouraged the students to practice telling time on an analog clock to become more confident.
- The students will begin our year-end project. They will be designing a taco truck! After learning about food trucks, the students will be responsible for creating a name and logo for their taco truck. From there, the students will decide on their menu and a "specialty taco". Then the students will design and create a three-dimensional truck. We will be inviting you in to see these fabulous designs!
Science:
- We hope the weather cooperates this week so we can get outside to begin our Nature Unleashed observations as we study 3 of Missouri's ecosystems, the forest, the prairie and the pond.
- We will be going on a field trip to the Claire Gempp Conservation Area on May 15th. Please sign and return the permission slip.

Things To Know...
- Thank you for sending in MAP encouragement notes for your child! They will LOVE reading them. If you have not yet sent yours in, feel free to e-mail them to me or send them in tomorrow!
- MAP testing begins TOMORROW! Each day before testing, your child will come home with a ticket that can be signed and returned the following day for surprise from our Treasure Bag. Your child has one in his/her Take Home Folder!

- Our chosen poetry anthology topic is "Food". The students are having fun with their creativity as they write poems about food.
Math:
- The students are doing GREAT with geometry! We will be working with quadrilaterals early this week before moving into Metric Measurement.
- The students will be reviewing geometry terms as they create a Geometry Name! Keep an eye out for it on Seesaw! They will also be playing a review game called, Mile A Minute. The students played it as we reviewed for our Social Studies test and LOVED it!
Science:
- We will begin our Nature Unleashed unit this week! Nature Unleashed is a curriculum written by the Missouri Conservation Department. The students will learn about Missouri's ecosystems and study the plants and animals found in them. Many of our lessons will take place outdoors as the students observe nature.
- We will be going on a field trip to the Claire Gempp Conservation Area in May. More details to come...

- Our chosen poetry anthology topic is "Food". The students are having fun with their creativity as they write poems about food.
Math:
- This week we will focus on geometry in math. The students will learn about lines segments, rays, parallel and perpendicular, and angles. We will also be spending time this week using a protractor to measure and create angles.
Science:
- As the students finish their Boston Tea Party STEAM project, they will have the opportunity to test their tea crate and see how water proof it is!

Things To Know...

- I am sure you heard about the taxation activity we did on Friday. The students were unfairly taxed throughout the day. They had to pay (with skittles) taxes for using the computers, sitting on our carpet, turning in papers, etc. They quickly realized how the colonists felt as they had fun playing along.
- The students will receive a new set of spelling words on Monday and will be tested over them next Thursday. They should be practicing them at home to help prepare for their test.
- Our last Scholastic book order will be coming home later this week!

- The students will continue to work with density this week as they complete another STEAM activity with their peers. They will be responsible for creating a crate that can hold a tea bag and keep it dry when placed in water. This activity goes along with the Boston Tea Party, which we learned about last week.

What's Happening in Room 34...
Things To Know...
- Recently, during a class meeting, the students requested a change in our Weekly Reflections (yellow form). They wanted something more simple to complete, so I had a few students brainstorm and create a new form. We began using it last week. The new form includes a weekly reading log and a place to record their assigned ALEKS topics (if they are assigned for the week). It should be signed and returned every Monday.
- Just a reminder.... all students are responsible for reading at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes at home.

- We will continue to tie reading and social studies together as we learn about the American Revolution. This week, we will continue to focus on the events that led to the Revolutionary War. Our main focus while reading about the Boston Massacre and the Tea Party, will be finding the main idea and writing a summary of a given paragraph. The students will participate in a fun activity to experience what it felt like to be taxed as a colonist.
- The students are having fun putting themselves in the shoes of a colonist and developing strong opinions on the topic.
Writer's Workshop:
- We will begin our poetry unit this week! The students will take a few days to study different poems and learn about the key elements of poetry. Near the end of the week, the students will decide on a topic for our class poetry anthology!
Math:
- We will review customary measurement this week and begin working with area and perimeter.
Science:
- We will continue working with matter this week as the students complete a STEAM challenge on density. The groups will be asked to create a boat using tin foil that can hold cargo and float.

Things To Know...
- We will ease back into the week with several new units this week! I can't believe we are in our last quarter for the year!
- The students will be responsible for completing at least 3 topics on ALEKS this week at home! If your child does not have access to a computer at home or is on a Knowledge Check, he/she will need to let me know so I can make sure they have class time to complete it. My goal is for each student to complete their 4th-grade ALEKS pie. We are off to a good start with 9 already meeting the goal!

- We will continue to tie reading and social studies together as we learn about the American Revolution. This week, we will focus on the events that led to the Revolutionary War. The students will participate in a fun activity to experience what it felt like to be taxed as a colonist.
Writer's Workshop:
- The students will write a persuasive essay this week after reading 2 different viewpoints on students learning to play musical instruments. After reading the articles, the students will side with a viewpoint and write a persuasive essay using evidence from the article to support their opinion.
Math:
- We will begin the customary measurement unit this week. The students will practice measuring with a ruler and understand and convert the units of length, capacity, and weight.
Science:
- We will begin our Mixtures and Solutions Unit this week as the students learn about the properties of matter and conduct a fun investigation on density!

- The students have earned a Character Celebration by demonstrating good character! They have chosen to have a p.j., stuffed animal, special snack, movie celebration! Wow... Sounds fun! Our celebration will be on our 1/2 day, this Thursday. Your child can bring in a special treat and/or drink to enjoy during the movie.

- The students will be introduced to decimals this week as we begin our next unit. They will learn to read decimals through hundredths, make the connection of money and decimals and understand the relationship between fractions and decimals.
Science:
- The students will complete their 2nd investigation this week using the Scientific Method.
- They will also be tested over the terms and the understanding of the Scientific Method on Thursday. The students will be given a review on Monday, create study cards during morning work and have time to study with a partner throughout the week. They should also study at home using their cards, review sheet and science notes.

- We will continue to work with fractions this week as the students learn to multiply a whole number by a fraction (video explanation). The students will review on Thursday and have a test on Friday over adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions by whole numbers.
Science:
- The students will complete an investigation this week following the Scientific Method.

Things You Should Know...
- The students should be creating a Valentine's box at home for their Valentine's Day party on Thursday. If you have any extra cereal boxes or smaller boxes that you could donate for those who do not have access to one, please send it to school with your child. I have also supplied the students with construction paper if they need it to help create the box.
- Our Valentine's Day party is on Thursday at 2:00. Thank you, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Kutrip for planning it!
- The students will be given their spelling list this week. Depending on when they are given, will depend on the test date. I will keep you posted. They will have their spelling in their Take Home folder and should be brought home and to school every day. This will allow them to practice at home and at school.

Reader's Workshop:
- The students will practice finding the main idea of a given passage. They will support the main idea with 2 supporting details in the passage.
Writer's Workshop:
- We will begin writing our informational writing piece this week as the students complete their research for the 1st chapter of their informational writing piece. The students have been working on paraphrasing as take notes.
Math:
- The students will review on Monday and be tested over fractions on Tuesday. We will continue working with fractions as the students learn how to add, subtract and multiply fractions.
Science:
- The students will be learning about the Scientific Method this week and the steps to completing an investigation. We will be completing a few investigations as they learn the process.
