What's Happening in Our Room....

Reader's Workshop:
  • The students had an opportunity to read on Readtheory.org last Friday.  It is a great online reading program that monitors the students' reading comprehension.  After reading nonfiction articles at their reading level, they are assigned to answer questions from the text.  The students LOVED the program and are encouraged to use it at home, as well.  We will have "technology reading" every Friday, where the students will read online using Read Theory or Reading Plus.
  • This week, the students will continue talking about the "theme" of our latest read aloud book, Tiger Rising.  The students will be assigned to construct a paragraph explaining the theme they believe Tiger Rising contains and support their reasoning with three pieces of evidence from the text.
  • They will also read and compare and contrast two articles from Storyworks with their reading partners this week.
    Writer's Workshop:
    • The students will  be given their spelling list tomorrow.  They will have a homework assignment later this week using their words.  The students will keep their spelling words in their Homework Folder, and they will also write them in their planner.  Their 1st spelling test will be Friday, October 20th.
    • The students had fun creating catchy titles for their personal narratives last week.  They will make covers for their stories this week as they finish up their final touches to their stories.
        Math:

        • The students will continue to work with multiplication this week.  They had fun learning how to multiply a single digit by 10, 100 and 1,000 on Friday.  The students will begin multiplying two-digit numbers by one digit numbers this week.

          Social Studies:
          • The students will continue to learn about major land forms and rivers in the United States this week.  They will also work with an atlas to better understand the use of maps.
          • The students will review latitude and longitude on Monday and will be tested over it on TuesdayWe will review land forms and major rivers of the United States this week, and the students will be tested over the material on Friday.  They will be given a blank map to practice at home.
