What's Happening in Room 34....

Things You Should Know....

  • The students have taken on their new classroom leaderships roles with GREAT pride this past week! The students did not need reminders to complete their given task and each of them are completing them on time and thoroughly! Yea!!
  • After monitoring the students' spelling in their writing pieces and daily work, I have decided to begin spelling tests.  The students will be responsible for working with and learning 13 words.  Three of the spelling words will come from your child's personal spelling list.  The students will begin keeping track of words they do not know how to spell in their spelling journal.  Five words will come from a spelling pattern and the other five words will be content words.  I will give the students spelling words on a Monday and they will be tested over the words the 2nd Friday after they are given.  This will give the students time to work with them in class and at home.  The students will be collecting words this week and they will be given their 1st list of words next Monday.
  • The students will be assigned to complete at least 3 topics on ALEKS at home this week.   If your child needs assistance with a topic, please help him/her by using examples similar to the problems, but please allow your child to work out the assigned problems on his/her own.  ALEKS progresses the students according to what they accomplish, and if your child has not truly mastered a topic, he/she will be presented with material that may be too challenging.

What's Happening in Our Room....

Reader's Workshop:
  • As we finish reading Tiger Rising, the students will make personal connections to the book; either with a character or the story.  They will continue to write "thinking" questions from the reading to practice book discussions with their peers.
  • The students will be introduced to readtheory.coman online educational tool that offers online reading activities at your child's reading level.   Every Friday, we will have technology reading.  The students will read from Read Theory or Reading Plus.  Your child is encouraged to use Read Theory at home, as well.
    Writer's Workshop:
    • The students are busy publishing their personal narrative using a google document.  This week, they will focus editing their punctuation and spelling.  They will revisit their writing goals later this week to confirm they have met their goal.
    • The students will be introduced to new vocabulary words this week using flocabulary.com!  Through fun online activities and songs, the students will work with this week's vocabulary words.
        Math:
        • The students will learn about factors and multiples while working with multiplication word problems this week.  They will review this chapter on Wednesday and will be tested over the material on Thursday.
        • The next several units require the students to know their multiplication facts.  They should be practicing them every evening.  They will be tested on Tuesday and Friday this week.
          Social Studies:
          • This week, the students will learn about the different land forms as they begin studying the United States regions.  This is preparing them for their next STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art Math) activity we will begin next Friday!
