What's Happening in Room 34.....

Important Announcements:

  • A Parent Reading Interview will be coming home on Tuesday.  Please take a couple minutes to share your thoughts on your child's reading habits and interests.  This information will better help me understand your child as a reader as I guide them in reading this year.
  • The students completed their 1st Weekly Reflection on Friday.  Please review it with your child, sign both sides and return on Tuesday.  They will receive a Weekly Reflection every Monday morning to record their nightly reading at home.  It should stay in their folder all week so they can complete their reflection at school on Friday.
Dates to Remember:
Wednesday:  Math Test

What's Happening in Our Room....

Reading Workshop:
  • The students will continue to work on their reading stamina in the classroom. Our goal is for the students to read and stay focused in their chapter book while I work with reading groups and confer with students about their book during independent reading.
  • I am still working to help the students find a "good fit book" for each of them to read at school and at home.  If you notice your child is reading a book that seems too challenging for him/her, please drop me an e-mail.  It is so important for the students to be reading books at their reading level, so they can grow as a reader.
  • This week, the students will be introduced to the book, The Tiger Rising.  It is a wonderful book that we will be reading together in class as we practice book discussions with our peers.  The students will also be studying the characters of the book as they learn how to "walk in the shoes of the characters"
    Writing Workshop:
    • The students will finish their paragraph, "The Best Part of Me" this week, and it will be made into a class book for others to enjoy.
    • We will begin studying a couple mentor texts, Owl Moon and Fireflies, as we begin writing a personal narrative.  The students will take notice of what makes a good personal narrative.
      Math:
      • The students are doing a WONDERFUL job reading numbers up to a hundred million! They are working hard in math and I love seeing their progress.
      • We will review place value on Tuesday and the students will be tested on Wednesday.  The students will come home with the review to look over Tuesday evening.
      • The students will be tested over the 3's or 4's on Friday!  They should be practicing their facts every evening.
        Science:
        • The students will be learning about Pangaea and plate tectonics this week as they do a fun investigation demonstrating what happens when the plates of the Earth move.
