What's Happening in Room 34......

Things You Should Know....

  • The students will be assigned to complete at least 3 topics on their ALEK's pie this week.  They will be given the form to complete as they finish them.  We have 8 students who have completed their 4th grade pie already and have moved on to the 5th grade pie!!  WAY TO GO!!
  • We will be switching from spelling words to vocabulary words this week.  The 8 words will come from our classroom word wall.  The students will be responsible for spelling the words, knowing the definition and using the word correctly in a sentence. The words will be given to them on Monday and they will be tested on Friday, January 19th.
  • The students will be assigned to work on multiplication Quicktables periodically for homework.  Quicktables are on ALEKS and the students know how to find them.  Several students still need to master their facts.  Please assist with practicing at home as much as possible.
  • The students will apply for a new Classroom Leadership Role this week and will begin their new role next week.

What's Going on in Our Classroom....
Reader's Workshop:
  • The students will be reading several articles on plastics and pollution this week.  After reading and discussing the topic, the students will write an opinion essay using the articles to support their opinion.
    Writer's Workshop:
    • This past week, each student wrote a poem titled "My Favorite Place to Be" using metaphors, similes and personification.  I will be compiling them and creating a class book, and each student will receive a copy.
    • We will be combining reading and writing this week as the students work on an opinion essay using 3 different articles on plastics and pollution.
        Math:

        • The students will continue to work with patterns, input/output tables and creating equations.  They will review for a test on Wednesday and will be tested on Thursday.
          Science:
          • The students will learn about the Scientific Method and begin working with it during several investigations.  They will be writing a hypothesis, identifying the independent, dependent and constant variables and writing step by step directions before conducting the investigation.  They will create data tables to record their findings and learn how to write a conclusion to their investigation.
