What's Happening in Room 30...
Important Announcements:
- We will have an author visit on Tuesday! Brandon Mull will be visiting with the 4th and 5th graders and share his new book, Dragonwatch. An order form came home before spring break to order a signed copy of the book.
- On Thursday, Nurse Eva will be presenting the Growth and Development lesson to the 4th grade boys and also to the 4th grade girls. Be prepared to talk to your child about the topics discussed on Thursday when they come home from school. If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Eva.

What's Happening in Our Room....
Reading Workshop:
- This week in reading, the students will set personal reading goals as we continue to read and work with nonfiction reading material. The students will learn the difference between summarizing and paraphrasing an article.
- Every Friday, the students will work with an online reading program called readingtheory.com. This program adapts to your child's reading level and presents them with skill-building exercises. Your child is welcome to work on the program at home and it will count towards his/her weekly reading minutes.
Writing Workshop:
- This week we will begin our Poetry Unit! The students will decide on a topic for our class anthology. They will begin writing poems later this week after we study look closely at different poems.
Math:
- Please continue to encourage your child to practice facts using flashcards, online games or Quicktables on ALEKS.
- This week, the students will learn about perimeter and area. We will do some fun activities as the students work with perimeter and area together.
Science:
- The students will continue to explore the power of magnets through hands-on activities from mysteryscience.com.
Social Studies:
- The students will continue to learn about Missouri statehood.

A Few of Our "Favorite Part of Me" Paragraphs
After reading the book The Best Part of Me, the students thought about what part of their body they appreciate the most. They created a well-developed paragraph explaining why it is their favorite part of them. We created a class book for all to enjoy!

Important Announcements:
- Conferences will be held on Thursday this week. If I have a conference scheduled with you, I will confirm our time on Monday.
- Your child wrote a reflection of the 3rd quarter and you will be receiving it early this week through the mail. The students really thought about their progress and were very honest in their reflection. I am sure you will enjoy reading it!

What's Happening in Our Room....
Reading Workshop:
- While reading nonfiction this week, the students will learn how to identify the structure an author uses by identifying key words in the text and the main idea.
- Every Friday, the students will work with an online reading program called readingtheory.com. This program adapts to your child's reading level and presents them with skill-building exercises. Your child is welcome to work on the program at home and it will count towards his/her weekly reading minutes.
Writing Workshop:
- The students will learn the difference between formal and informal language. They will be able to explain the difference, know when each is appropriate to use and identify examples of each. We will do some fun activities and we study the differences. The students will practice writing formally and informally as they write to me through e-mail.
Math:
- Please continue to encourage your child to practice facts using flashcards, online games or Quicktables on ALEKS.
- The students will continue to work with decimals this week as they learn how to order decimals and place them on a number line.
- The students will complete a review on Wednesday and be tested over decimals on Thursday.
Science:
- The students will explore the power of magnets through hands-on activities from mysteryscience.com.
Social Studies:
- The students will continue to learn about Missouri statehood.

- An envelope addressed to you came home last week regarding the upcoming Spring Conferences. Please review and respond accordingly.
- Overall, the students did a WONDERFUL job preparing for the science test last week! Thank you for your support with helping your child prepare at home. - We are continuing to study non-fiction this week while focusing on finding the main idea of non-fiction material. The students will find supporting details in non-fiction articles to support the main idea.
- Every Friday, the students will work with an online reading program called readingtheory.com. This program adapts to your child's reading level and presents them with skill-building exercises. Your child is welcome to work on the program at home and it will count towards his/her weekly reading minutes.
Writing Workshop:
- This week, the students will reflect on their behavior and academics during the 3rd quarter. They will write a 3rd quarter reflection to share with you. The students will address an envelope and mail it to you at the end of the week. Look to receive it by the beginning of next week!
- Our mentor sentence this week comes from Wonder, our current read aloud book. It will focus on several grammar rules: I or me, capitalization of pronouns, proper use of commas and possessive nouns.
Math:
- Please continue to encourage your child to practice facts using flashcards, online games or Quicktables on ALEKS.
- We will begin learning about decimals this week and the relationship between fractions and decimals.
- The students will need to master 3 topics in ALEKS this week for homework. This assignment needs to be turned in on Friday.
Science:
- The students will work with Snap Circuits and online circuit games as we wrap up our Electricity Unit.
Social Studies:
- The students are learning about early pioneer life.
